As a tax-exempt organization under IRC Section 501(c)(3), SCM considers federal donation acknowledgment rules, Minnesota charitable solicitation requirements, and public disclosure expectations for exempt organizations.
Organizations that solicit charitable contributions from Minnesota residents may be required to register with and report to the Minnesota Attorney General's Office depending on contribution levels, whether paid solicitors are used, and whether exemptions apply.
Donors who make a single contribution of $250 or more generally need a written acknowledgment to claim a federal charitable deduction. Acknowledgments should include SCM's legal name, contribution date, amount or description, and whether goods or services were provided in exchange.
Sample language: Thank you for your generous contribution to Somaliland Community of Minnesota. No goods or services were provided in exchange for this donation. Your gift is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

If a donor receives something of value in return for a payment exceeding $75, SCM may need to disclose the estimated value of what was received and the deductible portion. For non-cash contributions, SCM may describe the property received but does not assign donor tax value.
Exempt organizations may be required to make certain documents available for public inspection, including recent Form 990 filings, IRS determination letters, Form 1023 materials, and applicable unrelated business income filings.
